Negotiation before a scene: limits, safewords and check-ins

A practical walk-through of the conversation that should happen before any play, so everyone knows what they're agreeing to.

Why negotiate

Negotiation turns guesses into agreements. It's where you find out what each person wants, what's off the table and how you'll communicate once things start. Done well, it makes play better, not more awkward.

Yes, no, maybe

Many people use a yes / no / maybe list: each person marks activities they want, ones they'd try with care, and ones that are off the table. Compare lists and talk about the overlaps.

What to cover

Safewords and check-ins

A common system is traffic lights: green means keep going, yellow means slow down or check in, red means stop now. A safeword stops things immediately, with no argument and no sulking afterward.

Check in during the scene, not only when someone uses a safeword. A quick question like "color?" keeps everyone connected.

Agreements can change

Anyone can change their mind, before or during a scene. Something agreed last week isn't permission today. If you're unsure, stop and ask.

Write your agreements down, even as a note on your phone. It's easy to remember things differently later.
