Opening up: talking to a partner about kink or non-monogamy
How to raise the conversation, what to agree on, and how to handle jealousy when it shows up.
Raising it
- Pick a calm, private moment, not during an argument or right after sex.
- Lead with why: what you're curious about and what it would mean to you, not a list of demands.
- Make it clear that "no" and "I need time" are acceptable answers.
- Share a guide or two and let them read in their own time.
Go slowly
Most couples who do this well start small: reading together, going to a munch or social, maybe watching before doing anything. Each step is a chance to check in before the next one.
Agreements worth discussing
- What's okay, what isn't, and what needs a conversation first.
- Time and attention: how you protect time for each other.
- Safer-sex practices and testing.
- Privacy: what you share with others about your relationship.
- How either of you can pause or stop, and what happens then.
Jealousy is information
Jealousy is normal, even for experienced people. It's usually a sign of a need: reassurance, attention, or a change to an agreement. Talk about what's underneath it rather than treating it as failure.
Schedule regular check-ins, even when things are going well. Small issues are easier to fix early.
